In 1924 the orphaned Thomas Cook
arrived in Melbourne from Western Australia. On August 14 of
that same year Cobb & Co's last coach was driven from
Yuleba to Surat in Southern Queensland. Tom's older brother
was already working in a boot factory in North Fitzroy and
could get him a job. That suited this aspiring boxer because
the Fitzroy and West Melbourne Stadiums were handy and he
dreamed of making the big time. Twenty fights later (with one
loss) he began to see that his future was in boots, not bouts.
Two generations later the Thomas Cook brand of boots, country
clothing and adventure wear is famous throughout Australia.
The present company was established by Thomas Cook Junior as a
continuation of his father's firm. His son Murray has also
advanced the company. But 90 year old Thomas Cook likes
nothing better than to "keep an eye on things". As he says,
"my name is on the line" Since the days of Cobb & Co we've
been sticklers about quality and attention to detail like only
a hands-on family company can be. Won't you give us a
