Finding a suitable means of
communicating between two people around town is relatively
easy, just buy a couple of UHF CB two way radios, which are
sold over the counter in any number of stores and use the
local repeater station. Trying to use those same two way
radios to communicate between two people in an underground
tunnel system, such as a mine, is something altogether
different, you may only get as far the first bend or even
less. Leaky feeder cable was first produced some 30 years ago
as a method of improving communications within multi story
building and in underground tunnels. The term 'leaky feeder'
was adopted as being the easiest way to describe what it did,
however RF engineers would refer to it as a 'distributed
antenna system'. MineCom offer 2 different leaky feeder
systems, the MineCom1000 a VHF based system and the
MineCom2000 a UHF based
system.
